FireWise: Photos and Examples of FireWise Recommendations

Shows photos of primary types of fuel to remove to protect your home.

Common fuels generally present in the area.

The photo at right shows a bitterbrush plant. Bitterbrush is a highly flammable shrub and is often found growing under trees. It has been described as the perfect fuel because of the combination of dry deadwood and volatile resins.

ladder fuel

Low hanging, dead branches provide a path for a fire to spread from the grass to the bitterbrush, from the bitterbrush to the dead branches and then into the tree.
Another example of ladder fuels. Bitterbrush growing below low hanging dead branches in a thick stand of pine trees.

piles of deadwood fuel under trees

In this photo piles of accumulated branches from a tree thinning project are a potential path for a ground fire to spread into the remaining trees.
Standing dead trees provide a lot of fuel for a crown fire.

Pine needles and leaves on roof

Accumulations of pine needles and leaves on the roof and in rain gutters may be the most important fuels to remove.

Firewise reduced fuels around home sites.

In this photo some, but not all, firewise recommendations have been adopted. Bitterbrush has been removed. Low hanging dead branches have been trimmed and removed from the site. Some, trees have been removed to reduce the amount of fuel on the hill side below the structure.
At this location bitterbrush was removed. Low hanging branches were trimmed and deadwood on the ground has been removed from the site.
