Important News: Starting January 1, 2021, A new vital records law and rules go into effect that change the ordering requirements for birth and death certificates!
- For increased security of personal information, only individuals with a specific relationship to the person on the record being requested can receive a certificate.
- Qualified applicants will be required to provide identification and proof of eligibility documentation.
- The certificate fee will increase to $25 per copy. Additional processing fees may apply. The State Department of Health has published a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page to assist everyone in a better understanding of what the new requirements are for ordering birth and death certificates. The FAW webpage contains information about who can, and how to, order birth and death certificates.
Birth Certificates
Klickitat County is able to issue certificates for births taking place from July 1st 1907 to present. Payment is expected before any issuance of a birth or death certificate.
If you need a certificate of birth that took place prior to July 1st 1907, than you need to do the following;
- Review the new 2021 requirements, found here.
- If the birth took place in King, Pierce, or Spokane, contact the Washington State local health departments and districts.
- For all other counties, please contact the county auditor's office in the county of birth.
Out of State Birth Certificates

Death Certificates
Review the new 2021 requirements, found here. Klickitat County is able to issue death certificates only if the death was registered via the Washington State Electronic Death Registration system (EDRS). Please call or come in to see if we are able to issue the certificate.
Otherwise, contact the State Department of Health for more information. The Department of Health is able to issue death certificates from July 1st, 1907 to present.
Marriage and Divorce Certificates
The Health Department does not issue marriage or divorce certificates. Contact the State Department of Health for more information.
Our office issues certificates Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (excluding Holidays). The Health Department will ONLY accept CASH or MONEY ORDERS. Please do not send cash in the mail.
