Rehab The Lab is a program targeting school chemistry labs. The purpose of the program is to protect the health and safety of students and staff and to protect the environment from harmful chemical releases. The Implementation Plan Document (PDF) contains a brief outline of the program and an implementation schedule for high schools in Klickitat County.
The Washington State Department of Health and the Office of
Superintendent of Public Instruction published two lists of chemicals
that you should look for in your school lab:
Chemicals Deemed Unsuitable (PDF) - This file is a list of chemicals deemed unsuitable for use in K-12 schools, due to excessive risk that exceeds educational utility.
High Risk Chemicals (PDF) - This file is a list of chemicals that are appropriate only for advanced level high school science classes due to high risk and should be limited to small or micro scale quantities.
Health and Safety Guide for K-12 Schools in Washington, January 2003 (PDF) - The lists provided above were extracted from Health and Safety Guide for K-12 Schools in Washington, January 2003, published for Washington State by The State Department of Health and the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction. The chemical lists appear in Part III Appendices, Pages 12 - 17.
